Finding a new job in a new city can be challenging for anyone — imagine what it is like for someone who has recently lost their vision. Thanks to you and VisionCorps, Tim Runstrom is already on a path to success.

Just before Labor Day, Tim interviewed for a job with VisionCorps. “It went well,” he said. “I also did well on a Microsoft Office and Acrobat Adobe Pro assessment, so I’m in the registry for a position when one becomes available. It would be great to work for an organization with a mission and vision that align perfectly with my own passion.”

Meanwhile, Tim is continuing to apply for other jobs. “I really want to find work and be able to contribute to society again,” he said.

Helping Tim on his journey is a team of experts from VisionCorps: Occupational Therapist Taylor Newswanger and Orientation and Mobility Instructor Katarina Eller. “Taylor showed me some indoor sunglasses that help with my sensitivity to bright fluorescent lights,” he said. Tim was born without irises, and his vision has since deteriorated due to glaucoma. With Katarina’s instruction, he is learning to use a white cane to detect and avoid obstacles and get to destinations safely. “I have poor depth perception, so the cane is especially helpful for safety on curbs and steps.”

VisionCorps training is personalized and tailored to individual needs and goals. Tim is learning to use adaptive devices and accessibility features that are built into new technology. His training covers how to use public transportation and ridesharing apps, and how to ask for assistance. “I’ve also learned from others who are blind through the support group and group activities,” he said. “I’ve made new friends.”

“Overall, my life and my health have greatly improved, thanks to VisionCorps,” Tim said. “Everybody’s been so helpful. I’m no longer stuck in the house alone collecting a disability check. I can’t wait to see what my life will be like down the road a year from now!”
