Step-By-Step Towards A Brighter Future

Christine Monaco of Lancaster has nothing but praise for the help she’s received from VisionCorps: “Two years ago, I couldn’t leave my couch. I felt so alone. I had just lost most of my vision, and I didn’t know what to do.”
Thanks to VisionCorps, Christine has a new outlook on life. Her journey to regain her independence began with an introduction to a peer support phone group.
During the pandemic, VisionCorps decided to convert in-person support groups to phone groups. It was a silver lining in an otherwise isolating period. The groups were so popular, they’ve become a mainstay. “You can talk or choose just to listen if you’re not in the mood,” Christine said. She enjoys several, including one for young people her age, a book club with a volunteer reader, and one that discusses using the white cane, mobility, and other topics.
Learning to use the white cane was a struggle for Christine at first. “I was scared to use it; I thought it made me look vulnerable. It sat in the corner for a solid year, while I struggled. My husband Tony gave it a name: Candy Cane. He said, ‘Just take it with us,’ and ‘Here’s a good place to practice.’ Once I learned to use it, I realized I was more confident and actually less vulnerable. I felt so free.”
The next step was public transportation. “Two years ago I would never have gotten on a bus. I was terrified,” Christine said. “Now, I have the bus schedule memorized. I can handle steps, curbs, and crossing streets. I’ve learned to advocate for myself.”
Christine is optimistic about her future. “Technology continues to make my life easier,” she said. She inverts black text on a white background to white-on-black using a magnifier. She has a large print computer keyboard and is learning shortcut key commands. And she’s learning to use Fusion software that combines enlarged text, inverted background, and audio capabilities. “Now, I can do things I thought I could never do again. Soon, I’m going to begin looking for employment. VisionCorps has given me my life back!”
